Department of Community Medicine

MISSION

  1. To produce competent primary care physicians for the primary health care system in India.
  2. To produce competent post graduates for secondary and tertiary care systems, National Health programmes and other agencies in India
  3. To undertake a need – based and translational research in community / hospital settings for the benefit of the common people.
  4. To develop high quality hospital/community-based services and behavior change communication strategies for rural community and urban poor.
  5. To encourage continuous professional development among DCM faculty to achieve the desired vision.

VISION

The department of Community Medicine envisions achieving the standards of excellence in education of undergraduates and posting graduates, translational research, pro –poor services in hospital/community settings and foster professional development among DCM faculty.

Objectives: Objectives of teaching Community Medicine to MBBS students can be broadly grouped in to the following areas,

  1. To prepare them to function as community and first level physicians in accordance with the institutional goals.
  2. To make the students aware of environmental, social, financial, personal, occupational issues of the patients and to inculcate in the students the habit of considering the above aspects while rendering patient care.
  3. To teach them  techniques of prevention at Individual, National and International level for various health issues.
  4. To orient the students with Indian Health System, National Health Programmes and Policies and International Health Policies and Agencies.
  5. To teach research principles and methodologies so as to create scientific attitude.

Family Adoption Program:

2. Field visits for MBBS students:

We encourage the students to enhance their learning by taking them to the visits so that they can gain information by Observing places, objects and Understanding the process etc. We have scheduled filed visits to Water Treatment Plant Chembarambakkam, visit to Milk Dairy, Visit to Mahaveer Cancer Institute, Visit to Sewage Treatment Plants, Visit to ICTC and DOTS.

  1. Health day celebrations/ activities for MBBS students:

Guest lectures by various esteemed faculty excelled in their areas are called upon to give their insights and enlighten the MBBS students on the work done. Activities in collaboration with other departments within the institution is also carried out. We are partners in implementing National Health Programs in collaboration with State/District level Program officers for training and services.

    1. Mrs Aishwarya achieved 1st prize in the “NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETETION” for online PPT presentation on the occasion of National Nutrition Week 2023 Conducted by Manipal TATA Medical College.
